Smart Pension was founded by experienced finance & technology professionals and has been designed specifically to support UK businesses faced with the challenges of auto enrolment. Our mission is to transform pensions, savings and financial well-being, across all generations, around the world.

How we work:

We use Ruby on Rails for the code and focus on Test Driven Development. We don't cut costs when it comes to developing the best application for our customers. Alongside our great team we use a number of contemporary tools such as AWS, GitHub, Circle CI and New Relic, to name a few. Our approach to code is simple: keep it clean and ensure it has good test coverage. We don't ship code just to hit a deadline. At Smart Pension you will work alongside experienced developers who will review your code and you will review their code, everyone is treated equal when it comes to a PR. This approach has helped us maintain at least 96% test coverage of our application meaning we can focus on features rather than bug-fixing.

  • We believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is the most awesome workforce. Over 80% of our Engineering team volunteered their time to be coaches as the recent Rails Girls event - a free workshop aimed at making technology more approachable for women.
  • We are excited by new ideas, different ways of thinking, diverse backgrounds and approaches. We run hackathons where in 24 hours anyone can build and present new ways of thinking to the senior management team. Test new technologies, try new ideas - we're excited to get your ideas out to the world!
  • At Smart Pension our office culture is very important to us. We know our staff work hard, which is why we have multiple break rooms with a pool table, Nintendo Wii, bean bags, beer fridges, Play Stations etc. We’re continuously improving the environment in which we work, and have a dedicated team who organise office events for everyone to enjoy.

    The Awards.

    Firstly, our team are award winners! In November 2017 Smart Pension was amongst some impressive winners at the V3 Technology Awards as we were named Technology Innovation of the Year as part of our initiative that recognises rising tech talent in the UK’s IT June 2017. We were also named Best Continuous Delivery Integration Product at the DevOps Excellence awards in March 2018.

    The Team.

    We have a team of awesome developers who have helped to deliver the best end-to-end auto enrolment solution in the market. We’ve built a bespoke API that services our entire application suite. Its’ cloud based and therefore very scalable. Our API underpins our customer facing products, but has also been exposed to our partners who have integrated it within their own applications.


    The team is growing and we need to grow quickly, but in the correct manner. We don’t look for quick fixes. We certainly don’t do this in our code, so why would we do it with our hiring? We look for talented individuals with a real passion for what they do.

    The culture.

    Our culture is one of collaboration, we like to communicate and communicate again! We love individuals that are just as happy with the social aspect of Smart Pension as the working one and people who integrate well with us are people that want to challenge the way we do things and make us better. We’re not perfect, but we are happy to admit that and continue to work towards the day when we say we are.
